Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, passed away when she was a small girl, requiring her mother to provide for the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. She left the school in the span of two years of school to take on a acting career. It was a difficult path to take. Although she got an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs was offered. Following a short period as a hat-wearing club girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit the job she was working in. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. She also studied drama and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
